Man’s Best Friend 1 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford High White paper made by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2016. The print, which comes in an edition size of 100 and in a collection of 10 screen prints, depicts the beloved cartoon character from the Peanuts comic strip, Snoopy. Snoopy is not rendered conventionally, as KAWS uses thick white lines against a black backdrop to produce a sketch-like drawing of the cartoon beagle.
Man’s Best Friend 1 is part of the Man’s Best Friend Collection, a body of 10 screen prints, all of which depict Snoopy, the cartoon dog. The collection portrays the cartoon character in a new way, rendering him in a more abstract style, using thick black or white lines, scrawled onto the page. The composition of these prints is slightly disorderly, contrasting with Snoopy’s traditional, simple and clean aesthetic.
KAWS has a long history of appropriating cartoon characters and rendering them in his own, graphic style. Other notable characters that have featured in his artworks include the Smurfs, characters from Sesame Street and The Simpsons. KAWS’ love of animation and cartoons can be traced back to his studies at the New York School of Visual Arts where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration. KAWS also worked as a freelance animator for Jumbo Pictures, where he honed his excellent draughtsmanship, working on the backgrounds of animation series such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug.
