Companion Vs Astroboy is a signed screen print made by the renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2002. Coming in an edition size of 50 the print shows Companion, one of KAWS’ best-known cartoon characters, who is easily identifiable due to his skull and crossbone head and crossed out eyes. Companion is rendered straddling Astro Boy, a famous Japanese manga character. The two characters seem to be in a fight as Companion holds Astro Boy’s head in his arms. The position shows off his Mickey Mouse-style gloved hands, each with a cross on them, a signature element of KAWS’ visual language. The characters are both drawn in simple yet striking thin white lines and set against a black background. The print showcases KAWS’ excellent draughtsmanship and expertise in illustration.
Companion Vs Astroboy is part of KAWS’ Astroboy collection, a body of artworks, all of which depict his beloved cartoon character, Companion. The print can be seen alongside Companion Vs Pikachu, 2002, which similarly shows Companion in a fight with another well-known cartoon character.
Companion was created by KAWS in 1999 and was born out of KAWS’ early experimentation with graffiti and street art. KAWS moved to New York to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts in the 1990s and took to the streets, spray painting phone booths and bus shelters with a stock of original cartoon characters, one of which was Companion.
