Meaning & Analysis

The man is wearing headphones and carries a rucksack. As the title of the print indicates, the figure depicted in this print is a student, going about his daily life in the city of London. The figure is rendered from side-on, captured in motion, striding across the composition. Set against a pale blue backdrop, Opie employs his clever technique of duplicating the man’s legs and blurring them, producing the illusion of movement.
Student captures the essence of Opie’s distinct visual style which is characterised by his use of simple forms, thick outlines and blocks of flat colour.
