Mechanic is a signed digital print made by the renowned British artist Julian Opie in 2014. The print comes in an edition size of 50 and shows a male figure wearing a red T-shirt and black shorts. The man is wearing headphones and appears to be walking across the composition. The red of the man’s shirt clashes with the vibrant green backdrop.
The male figure in Mechanic is faceless and rendered using thick black lines filled with blocks of colour. Opie duplicates the man's arms and legs to produce an illusion of movement, injecting the print with a sense of dynamism. The print can be seen alongside a variety of other prints made by Opie that are part of his Walking In London collection. Each print in this collection features a faceless person walking and the titles of the prints refer to their professions which range from nurse to academic, mechanic to architect.
Capturing a man walking to or from work reflects Opie's fascination with mundane reality. Opie’s artworks often look at the quotidian and explore how to represent the ordinary. Discussing his representation of the ordinary and everyday, Opie explains: “mundane things are just as exciting as all the things you might imagine escaping into”.
