Street 6 is a signed relief print made by the acclaimed British artist Julian Opie in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 55 the print shows four figures captured in motion, walking across the composition. The figures are rendered using thick coloured lines and are set against a vibrant blue backdrop. Although Opie does not include a cityscape background, the viewer can infer that the anonymous figures are walking through a city from their clothes and the objects they are carrying.
Street 6 is one of six prints in Opie's Street collection. Each print in this collection shows a group of faceless figures depicted walking through a city. The prints can be seen alongside a group of three auto paint on aluminium sculptures that Opie exhibited in New York as part of his first solo exhibition at the Lisson Gallery in 2019.
Opie often produces artworks of people walking. Other notable collections of figures walking by Opie include Walking In London and Walking In The Rain. The Street collection reflects how Opie prefers to depict ordinary people in his artworks who are not known by the viewer. Opie avoids depicting ‘iconic’ subjects who are instantly recognisable, as was often done by Pop artists like Andy Warhol, who Opie is frequently compared to. Opie privileges his immediate surroundings, taking inspiration from daily life and the quotidian. Opie’s artworks showcase mundane reality yet still retain an intriguing and captivating pull that seizes the viewer’s attention.
