Street 2 is a signed relief print made by the renowned British artist Julian Opie in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 55 the print shows four figures captured walking across the composition. The figures are drawn using thick lines filled with block colours. Each figure is rendered in a different bold colour and the four people are set against a vibrant green backdrop.
Street 2 can be seen alongside five other relief prints made by Opie, all of which depict a group of anonymous people walking. The prints are part of Opie’s Street collection which was made to accompany his auto paint on aluminium sculptures of the same name, which similarly depict figures walking through a city. The artworks were shown at Opie’s first solo gallery exhibition in New York City at the Lisson Gallery in March 2019.
The figures in Street 2 capture the essence of Opie’s distinct visual style which is characterised by his use of simplified forms rendered using thick outlines filled with blocks of colour. Opie’s style has been compared to Minimalism and Pop Art and the artist was clearly influenced by the cartoon and comic book imagery of Roy Lichtenstein, as well as Patrick Caulfield’s use of bold outlines.
