Meaning & Analysis

The man in Jeremy Walking In Coat is captured in motion and Opie skilfully creates the illusion of movement by duplicating the lower portion of the figure’s legs and arm and blurring them. This technique is used in numerous artworks by Opie, notably in his Walking In London and Walking In The Rain collections, which feature a variety of figures captured walking through the streets of urban cities.

This print is exemplary of Opie’s distinct visual language and artistic style which the artist has developed since graduating from Goldsmiths college in 1983. Opie’s style, as seen in Jeremy Walking In Coat, is characterised by his use of simplified forms and the way in which he renders them using thick black lines filled with bold blocks of colour.

  • Julian Opie, born in 1958, dances through the contemporary art scene with a distinctive digital allure. A trailblazer of the 1980s New British Sculpture movement, Opie's work is a highly stylised blend of Pop Art and minimalism which navigates the intersection of technology and visual expression. From his early experiments with computer-generated art to his iconic portraits and animated installations, Opie's work exudes a captivating simplicity. His signature style, marked by bold lines and reduced forms, is internationally recognisable and has made him a key player in British contemporary art.
