Combining the photograph of a contemporary post-industrial building with fragments of cutout paper, Blackwelder (special edition) (2015) by Jonas Wood represents the artist’s long-standing interest in the commonplace subject matter. The original photograph used in the background appears on the cover of the catalogue that accompanied Jonas Wood and Shio Kusaka: Blackwelder, the artist’s first exhibition in Hong Kong.
The brick building featured in the background photograph is not accidental. The titular Blackwelder is the name of the street in Los Angeles where Jonas Wood and his wife Shio Kusaka share their studio. From this perspective, Wood’s choice to impose the image of a plant pot on the photograph of the building seems suggestive. Blackwelder can be seen as a work, in which the artist celebrates his favourite subject matter as well as the beloved space that inspires his continued focus on the artefacts of everyday life. As Wood commented on his subject matter: "You could call [my work] a visual diary or even a personal history. I’m not going to paint something that doesn’t have anything to do with me. Of all of the possible things I could paint, the thing that interests me is something that I can get close enough to in order to paint it honestly."
