Meaning & Analysis
In Right Clavicle, Basquiat presents a singular body part from multiple points of view, reminiscent of 3 Views Of The Shoulder Joint Opened. The broken line of the ‘upper view’ evokes the injuries suffered by Basquiat when involved in a car accident as a child. 1983 was a monumental year for the artist, which saw him feature in the Tony Shafrazi Gallery's 'Champions' show with Keith Haring and Brett De Palma.
The monochromatic Anatomy series reveals the artist's intense fascination with the intricacies of the human body. This collection of prints is intimately connected to the entirety of his catalogue due to the way in which anatomical references can be found in pieces created throughout his career, despite the fact that the black-and-white simplicity of this series contrasts sharply with the bold use of colour with which the artist is distinctly associated.
