Meaning & Analysis

Invasion Kit 7, Union Space is part of Invader’s iconic installation project, the Space Invaders project, which has come to be regarded as one of the most elaborate street art stunts in art history. The project, which Invader started in 1998, involves the artist travelling to cities all over the world to install mosaics of alien characters from Space Invaders. Invader typically installs around 20 to 50 mosaics per city he ‘invades’ and these invasion kits encourage people to carry out their own ‘invasions’, just like Invader has done in over 30 countries.

The kits are all produced in Invader’s studio and sold in the Space Shop. Invader has also created maps and guides which enable people to track down his artworks and see how they are spread out across various cities.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
