Meaning & Analysis

The print was published by the artist in 2014 for his largest solo exhibition in Japan entitled Home Sweet Home, held at the Gallery Target, Tokyo. The exhibition offered viewers a retrospective of most of Invader’s mosaic works together with some of his paintings and sculptures. Additionally, for the exhibition Invader created an installation featuring a new and original Space Invader mosaic.

The print was then exhibited in conjunction with Repetition Variation Evolution for his exhibition Hello My Game Is held at Musée en Herbe in Paris in 2017 in a room dedicated to Invader’s works on checkered paper. Admittedly, checkered paper is a medium the artist particularly enjoys, since the division of the page into tiny squares lends itself perfectly to the pixelation of images, perfectly mimicking the digital pixel as well as the mosaic tiles he uses so frequently.

Thus, through its deployment of chequered paper, the print attests once again to Invader’s engagement with different media that offer him the possibility of working with the pixelation and digitalisation of images.
