Meaning & Analysis

The alien on the book’s cover is a character from the popular Japanese arcade game, Space Invaders. This game inspired Invader’s impressive installation project, the Space Invader project, which the artist started in 1998 and involved him travelling all over the world, carrying out ‘invasion waves’ in which he would install mosaics of aliens onto the walls of the cities he visited.

Invasion Guide 02, Los Angeles / Mission Hollywood is part of the Space Invaders project as it provides detailed information regarding the mosaics Invader installed in Los Angeles between 1999 and 2004. The book enables people to follow in the footsteps of Invader and track down his alien installations. Invader hopes his project will engage people who aren’t typically interested in art of familiar with the art world, explaining, ‘this project, I hope, will leave a print not only on the streets but also on the minds.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
