Invader In Djerba is a mixed media artwork made by the daring French street artist Invader in 2021. Invader has created a series of stamps for Djerba, an island off the Tunisian coast. The stamp plays off the popular tag ‘I am Djerba’ by replacing the ‘am' with an alien. Aliens are a recurring visual motif in Invader's artworks and the popular arcade game, Space Invaders, made by Japanese game manufacturer Taito in 1978, has had a profound impact on the development of the artist’s career.
Invader In Djerba can be seen alongside the lithograph print made by Invader in 2020, Djerba Island. This print shows a map of Djerba and resembles an old treasure map due to the composition’s yellowing paper and hand-burnt edges.
Both Invader In Djerba and Djerba Island are part of Invader’s impressive installation project, the Space Invaders project, which the artist started in 1998. The project involves Invader travelling to various cities all over the world and installing mosaics of aliens onto the walls of the cities he visits. Djerba Island provides detailed information regarding the 58 mosaics Invader installed all over the island and the stamps Invader produces for Invader In Djerba hint to the success and long-lasting impact of this artistic ‘invasion'.
