90 x 100cm, Edition of 10, Photographic print

Pyramide is a signed photographic print created in 1966 by internationally acclaimed German artist Gerhard Richter. Released in a limited edition of 10, the artwork represents Richter’s predilection for the blurring technique as well as an innovative way of thinking about the relationship between painting and photography.
Pyramide is one of the artworks that see Richter apply paint directly to the surface of the photograph. In order to achieve the blurred effect, the artist drags a dry brush over the wet paint. This creates an evocative, dreamlike vision that challenges our understanding of the traditional media, such as photography and painting. Richter commented on the function of the blurring technique: “I blur things so that they do not look artistic or craftsmanlike but technological, smooth and perfect. I blur things to make all the parts a closer fit. Perhaps I also blur out the excess of unimportant information.”
