Meaning & Analysis
The Yosemite Suite 5 by David Hockney is a digital print created in 2010. This piece depicts a landscape of Yosemite National Park, featuring towering trees and a winding straight purple path which stretches to the vanishing point in the lower middle of the composition. The work is part of a series produced during Hockney's visits to Yosemite in 2010 and 2011, reflecting his interest in California's diverse scenery.
The artwork presents trees with trunks rendered in deep browns and reds, set against a vivid blue sky. A purple path meanders through the foreground, guiding the viewer's eye into the forest and creating depth. Hockney's use of the iPad allowed for rapid experimentation with colour and composition, resulting in a vibrant interpretation of the landscape.
This work marks a significant development in Hockney's artistic practice, representing his transition from traditional media to digital tools. Unlike his earlier landscape paintings, The Yosemite Suite 5 showcases Hockney's approach to capturing the immediacy of plein air drawing using contemporary technology. This shift aligns with his history of artistic experimentation, from Polaroid collages in the 1980s to large-scale multi-canvas paintings of the 2000s.
