With The Yosemite Suite 23 we return to the famous Ahwahnee Hotel which Hockney had depicted in The Yosemite Suite 1 from the present series, the Yosemite Suite of 2010. Here we are shown a bit more of the lodge, recognisable for its striking stone and wood facade, designed in 1925 by Gilbert Stanley Underwood. The imposing building is softened by the presence of balconies and brightly coloured awnings, as well as a couple of shadowy passersby who draw our attention to the scale not just of the building but the mountain that looms behind it. Dominated by purple tones, it complements the overcast sky, its steep rock face striated with thin lines that mark the passage of time on this landscape. In this work however, Hockney has chosen to contrast the sublime nature of the mountain with the manicured pristineness of the hotel’s garden which is bordered by a low hedge and the fir trees that are ubiquitous in this series. Drawn on the iPad, which was first released in 2010, the year this work was made, The Yosemite Suite 23 makes use of its digital medium to employ a range of different textures and effects to convey the artist’s viewpoint, representing Hockney’s ongoing ability to push the limits of his printmaking practice.
