Meaning & Analysis
Four Images is a photographic print consisting of four pictures taken by David Hockney in the summer over several years of his visits and travels. The photographs include Henry Avoiding the Sun (1975), Yves-Marie Asleep - May (1974), My Parents - Bradford (1976) and Jean In The Luxembourg Gardens (1974). Brought together and arranged into a single composition, the pictures strike with their idyllic summertime atmosphere and quiet surroundings. Photographs of Henry, Yves-Marie, and Jean can be seen as glimpses into the intimate moments of composure and tranquillity. In each of them, the central human figure is seen taking rest against a quiet, sun-dappled background. Depicting Yves-Marie lying down near a Californian pool, the 1974 photograph captures the delicate patterns of light that dance on the surface of the water. Preserving clearly the harmonious, translucent quality of the water and light, the image explains why many of Hockney’s later swimming pools paintings were based on photographs.
In 1976, Sonnabed Gallery exhibited photographs taken by Hockney during the several years of his travels and published them as a single portfolio. Apart from paintings and prints his name is most strongly associated with, Hockney created photo collages and took pictures of friends with his polaroid camera in casual situations, often speaking of photography in terms of an ‘experiment becoming a new art form.’ What distinguishes Twenty Photographic Pictures is not only Hockney’s recourse to photography as a medium but also the candid character of pictures and casual context, in which they were taken.
