Hockney’s Arrival of Spring series blends tradition with innovation. Digitally composed on iPads and rendered as large-format prints, these vibrant landscapes are already proving themselves as standout performers in the contemporary print market. In the first half of 2025 several have surfaced at various global auctions. The top-selling was at Sotheby’s April sale, in its auction debut, Arrival of Spring, 25th of March, achieved £192,264 ($254,000 USD). Since their auction debut in 2017, works from this series have delivered triple-digit gains and strong liquidity.
The market turned sharply in 2021, when one work exceeded £100,000 for the first time. Since then, average values have surged, and trading volume hit a record high in 2023. In 2025 alone, one print sold twice in just three months – first at £53,340, then again at £173,509. That marks a 225% increase in under 90 days.
With two edition sizes – one of 25 and a rarer large-scale edition of 10 – the market dynamics vary. While the smaller edition drives most liquidity, the large-format works command top-tier prices, such as the £416,529 achieved in 2022. Both formats, however, have shown consistent appreciation and limited downside.
Out of 64 total variations, only 46 have ever been offered publicly. This reinforces the series' scarcity. Repeat sales have proven especially strong, with several prints achieving 600–670% increases between appearances. The series offers an ideal mix of innovation, accessibility, and high resale potential.
