The Cure (sky blue, orange, sunset orange) is a silkscreen print by Damien Hirst on Somerset Tub. Produced in 2014, the print shows a two-colour pill rendered by Hirst in bright and bold orange and sunset orange against a sky blue background. The vibrant and warm colours of the pill stand out against the plain blue background. As the colours of the pill radiate from the print, attention is drawn towards the pill which becomes the focal point of the composition.
The Cure (sky blue, orange, sunset orange) is one of thirty silkscreen prints that compose Hirst’s The Cure series. The series is inspired by modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, something which has interested Hirst since the inception of his artistic career. In this series, Hirst renders a singular pill in a combination of two colour tones against a bold and vibrant coloured backdrop. The colours Hirst uses, as well as the silkscreen printing technique, are reminiscent of the prints produced by Pop artist, Andy Warhol, in the 1960s. It is clear that Warhol inspired Hirst and was a large influence on the development of his visual language.
Hirst was drawn to the minimalist design of pharmaceutical products and the way in which the simplicity of tablets and their packaging perpetuates the modern fantasy “that everything can be cured”.
