Meaning & Analysis

The Cure (powder pink, lollypop red, golden yellow) is one of thirty silkscreen prints that compose Hirst’s The Cure series. In this series, each print follows the same formula. Hirst renders a singular pill in a combination of two colour tones against a bold and vibrant coloured backdrop. Hirst’s use of bright block colours resonates with the Pop Art style popularised by Andy Warhol in the 1960s. Warhol’s work has clearly influenced Hirst and the development of his own visual language and artistic style.

The series is based on the minimalist aesthetic of the medicinal pill which, despite its simple appearance, behaves in an extremely complex and ingenious way. Hirst has explored the pharmaceutical industry and their products throughout his artistic career, starting with the Medicine Cabinets installation he produced while still studying Fine Arts at Goldsmiths in London in 1998.
