It’s A Beautiful Day 4 is a block print from Damien Hirst’s It’s a Beautiful Day series from 2013. The print shows a yellow butterfly in the centre of the composition with its wings outspread, depicted in exquisite detail. Set against a grey backdrop, this print is more subdued in its colour palette than others in the series.
Harking back to the work of Pop artist Andy Warhol, Hirst creates a series of six prints with the same subject and composition, but with varying colour combinations, each print showing a different species of butterfly against a block colour backdrop. Rendering the fine detail of the butterfly wings and setting this against the bold colour, Hirst combines these elements to produce an image that finds universally engaging triggers. This contrast between bold block colours and the realistic image plays with Hirst’s concern with facts and truth that images are assumed to depict.
Hirst has obsessively depicted the butterfly motif throughout his artistic oeuvre. Each butterfly is born with a unique pattern and mimics the individuality that frames much of human life. The butterfly motif appears both in printed editions as well as in installations where visitors are situated in a room of live butterflies.
