Meaning & Analysis
I Love You (coral, cool gold, oriental gold) is a foil block print from Damien Hirst’s 2015 I Love You series. The print features a single butterfly depicted in two tones of gold and in exquisite, photographic detail. The butterfly sits in the centre of a bold, coral heart and set against a plain white backdrop.
Simplistic in its visual language and bright in colour, I Love You (coral, cool gold, oriental gold) conveys an immediate message of love and joy to the viewer. Hirst is notoriously ambivalent with his subject matter and brings themes of love and death into dialogue with one another. This particular print plays on such themes through the butterfly motif that retains the appearance of life even in death.
Reminiscent of the work of Pop artist Andy Warhol, Hirst creates a series of twelve prints with the same subject and composition, but with varying colour combinations making each print unique.
