Meaning & Analysis
Silver Tears is a mixed media print made by renowned artist, Damien Hirst. Produced in 2012, the inkjet and foil block print shows rows of diamonds arranged on shelves foil blocked in silver. The diamonds appear to be sparkling and glittering in the light, achieved through the use of metallic foil blocking onto inkjet.
Diamonds are a central motif used by Hirst throughout his works, alongside skulls and butterflies. The artist often incorporates diamonds into his art, through the use of diamond dust in his prints, to more overt uses, such as the impressive piece produced in 2007, For the Love of God, in which Hirst studded a human skull with over 8,000 diamonds. Hirst was attracted to diamonds due to the symbolism they carry. Diamonds are a symbol of desire, love, perfection but are also linked closely with loss, memory and melancholy.
The print is part of the Utopia series, composed of six prints which each depict rows of objects, ranging from diamonds to pills and cigarette butts. By including such a variety of objects, and arranging them as if they were luxury items, Hirst democratizes the objects, arguing that cigarette butts should be viewed the same as diamonds, and that both are a worthy subject of high art.
