Meaning & Analysis
Beatus Qui Intelligit is a signed silkscreen print with glaze produced by renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print shows a pattern of concentric circles composed of butterflies. The butterflies, all in different shapes, sizes and colours bring an exciting and dynamic energy to the print. Rendered against a yellow backdrop, blue, red and yellow butterflies dominate the composition, making it one of the livelier prints in the series.
The print, which was produced by Hirst in 2015, is part of the Psalms series, composed of 150 prints, all of which are named after a psalm from the Old Testament. Each print in the series depicts a pattern made of butterflies, however the colours and patterns vary from print to print, meaning no two designs are alike.
The pattern in this print is spectacular and immediately captures the attention of the viewer. The print showcases the natural beauty of the butterfly and celebrates the beauty of nature and life. The series also touches on darker, more serious themes, as with many of Hirst’s works. Part of Hirst’s attraction to the image of the butterfly is that they retain the appearance of life, even in death. The dead butterflies depicted in the print therefore also point to the fragility of life and are used to explore the theme of death.
