Spin Photo is a signed C-Print on Rc-Paper produced by renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. Made in 2002, the print depicts a beautiful starry night landscape. Hirst shows the night sky full of stars, with concentric circles of spinning stars dominating the composition. The white stars stand out against the deep blue night sky backdrop.
The print can be viewed alongside Hirst’s iconic and critically acclaimed series of spin paintings. These works, created on a spinning surface, aim to give off a dynamic sense of movement to capture the movement of life. While the spin paintings are conventionally rendered in bright and vibrant coloured paints, this painting stands out from the others, using the traditional and conventional colours used to depict the night sky.
Hirst first started experimenting with the spin technique in 1992 when he was working in his studio in Brixton, London. The artist continued developing the technique, investing in his own spin machine. It was when Hirst was living in Berlin in 1994 that he created his first exhibition of spin paintings at the Contemporary Fine Arts gallery. Discussing the appeal of the technique, Hirst explains, “I really like making them. And I really like the machine, and I really like the movement. Every time they’re finished, I’m desperate to do another one.”
