Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, known simply as Christo, was a pioneering artist renowned for his monumental environmental installations that transformed public spaces and landscapes worldwide. Born in 1935 in Bulgaria, he rose to fame for his unique approach to wrapping buildings and natural features, challenging perceptions of art and environment. His collaborations with Jeanne-Claude, his partner and collaborator, were integral to his endeavours, producing iconic works like the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and The Gates in New York City's Central Park. Christo's commitment to self-funding these projects ensured their integrity, free from commercial or political ties, underlining his dedication to artistic freedom and autonomy.
