Meaning & Analysis

Elongated Triangles 2 (1971), by British Op-Artist Bridget Riley, was released as an edition of 75 signed screen prints. Evoking the design of a backgammon board, the print stretches this reference vertically to create the unsettling illusion of parallel stripes.

Riley’s selected tones for this iteration of her Elongated Triangles series, appear to vibrate along the edges where the colours meet. Unquestionably, this is precisely what Riley is endeavouring to explore in this series through electrifying colour combinations that dazzle and mesmerise. Working in series throughout her career, Riley was committed to exploring the effects form and colour can have on the viewer.
