Meaning & Analysis

Composed of six colours, including black and white, Light Between is one in a series of iconic prints by the British artist Bridget Riley, instantly recognisable as the work of her hand. This signed screen print was released in 1982 in an edition of 75. With a methodical and thoughtful approach to constructing her artworks, the sequence of colours is not random, but the result of meticulous drafting. In this series, black and white feature to act as a pause in the sequencing of colours and accentuate the relationships between the other hues as they interact along their vertical interface.

Having devoted her artistic career to actively engaging the viewer through the use of elementary shapes, Riley creates visual experiences that trigger optical sensations of vibration and movement. Despite working exclusively with stripes and a limited colour palette in this series, Riley is successful in creating a stunning visual variety.
