Meaning & Analysis

The symbol of the truck appears throughout Dylan’s portfolio of work, connecting to his youth as well as to his music. In this way, Truck directly connects to Dylan's seminal 1965 album Highway 61 Revisited - the highway that linked his birthplace of Duluth, Minnesota, to the musical heritage cities of the South. To Dylan, the truck becomes a symbol of mobility and freedom, embodying the Beat Generation's romanticisation of the American road, a romanticisation that is here enhanced by Dylan’s Expressionist-influenced style and the texture of the mixed media finish.

The original painting for this print was created during his continuous touring schedule that had him literally living the highway life he painted, making trucks as much a part of Dylan’s adult life and career as it was his youth in Hibbing. The work stands as testament to Dylan's multifaceted creativity, bridging his musical storytelling with visual narratives during the period when his art market was establishing itself following his 2008 breakthrough. As part of the Drawn Blank series, this artwork reflects his fascination with ordinary, authentically American subjects transformed through artistic vision.

  • American icon, Bob Dylan, has successfully established himself as a visual artist alongside his highly decorated musical career. Having formed a distinctive visual style, Dylan's art often mirrors the poetic and introspective nature of his music, reflecting his profound observations and reflections on the human experience. Drawing on every day experiences and objects, the artist's works are characterised by bold lines and washes of vibrant colour. Dylan's visual art has been featured in exhibitions around the world, allowing audiences to experience another facet of his creative genius and demonstrating the depth of his artistic versatility and creative expression.
