Meaning & Analysis

Weston Super Mare by Banksy depicts a senior citizen seated on a park bench, their hands folded in their lap, and their cane rested on the bench beside them. The subject looks to be enjoying the solitude, completely oblivious to the large rotating bandsaw that is tearing up the earth as it races towards them. The original painting on canvas, exhibited in Bristol in 2000, featured a block blue sky, and the elderly subject sporting a green jacket.

This artwork appears to suggest that, even the very comfortable among us in your average British seaside town, still have the terrifying prospect of death rushing towards us. Weston Super Mare was also the location of Banksy's 2015 'experience' Dismaland which is said to have attracted over 150,000 visitors.

  • Renowned British street artist, Banksy, is the enigmatic figure behind some of the most subversive works in the Urban Art scene. Despite his anonymity, the artists' disruptive stunts have not only gained him notoriety, but they have vocalised his stance on many social and political issues. As seen with the likes of Girl With Balloon and Napalm, Banksy uses his distinctive stencil technique to produce thought-provoking commentaries on challenging themes. The showcase of rebellion that lines his work has caused his secondary market value to soar in recent years, propelling him to the top of the Urban Art scene.
