April 2019 | Christie's New York - United States | Viewpoint - Signed Print |
Viewpoint is a signed lithograph print on Arches paper produced by the renowned Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Made in 1984, the print comes in a limited edition size of 20. In this print, Warhol captures a snapshot of a city street. The artist draws a succession of tall buildings using hand-drawn gestural lines. The images of the city buildings are layered with blocks of pink, blue and orange colour which gives the print a collage-like effect.
The print was made towards the end of Warhol’s artistic career and the artist died three years after producing this print. Viewpoint marks a significant turn in the artist’s visual style and his experimentation with patterns of colour blocking. In many of Warhol’s later works, the artist produced prints in which blocks of colour are applied uniformly or diagonally over a drawn image, as is seen in Viewpoint and other prints such as Jean Cocteau (1985).
Viewpoint differs in subject matter to many of Warhol’s earlier prints which explore themes of celebrity culture, fame and consumerism. Warhol is arguably best known for his portraits of American stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, as well as his commercial illustrations of consumer goods like high heel shoes, items of jewellery and handbags.
