Absolut Vodka is a lithograph print in colours made by the critically acclaimed Pop artist Andy Warhol in 1985. The signed print comes in an edition size of 100 and shows a bottle of Absolut Vodka rendered in Warhol’s signature Pop Art style, characterised by his use of crayon-like gestural lines and bold colours. Warhol uses an abstract colour palette, applying a dark blue colour to the bottle which is set against a yellow backdrop. The brand’s name is written in big blue letters and outlined in purple which draws attention towards the vodka brand.
Absolut Vodka was commissioned by Absolute Vodka as part of their advertising campaign in the 1980s. Warhol was the first artist to be commissioned to create an artwork for the brand and it was a tremendous success that brought the Swedish vodka brand significant publicity.
Warhol’s artwork was so successful that Michael Roux, owner of Absolut, asked Warhol to suggest other artists that could be used in an advertising campaign for the spirit. Since Warhol, over three hundred and fifty artists have been commissioned to produce images of the vodka, including Keith Haring and Ed Ruscha. Absolut Vodka reflects Warhol’s love for consumer culture and desire to turn everyday consumer goods into works of fine art.
