This week, MyArtBroker brings you updates on Banksy’s London Zoo murals, exciting Andy Warhol discoveries, and Tracey Emin’s newest accolades. We also dive into upcoming exhibitions featuring artists and celebrity collections as the art market prepares to close out the year and set its sights on 2025.
Banksy’s mural of hanging monkeys hanging over Brick Lane, originally from his London Zoo series this summer, was reportedly removed overnight for reasons yet to be confirmed. Initially, a glass cover was placed over the artwork, hinting at efforts to preserve it. However, like much of street art, it appears this piece too has succumbed to its ephemeral nature.
In other Banksy news, Bonhams’ online Prints and Multiples sale concluded on 3 December, with Banksy’s Tesco Soup Can leading the auction of over 200 lots. An unsigned edition of the piece achieved £15,360. Other standout performances in the sale included works by Bridget Riley and L. S. Lowry.
In a special preview of the upcoming season of The Antiques Roadshow, a Warhol discovery was revealed. A mixed-media work reportedly from his Golden Shoe series, with the work valued at $125,000 - 150,000. The work was reported as gifted to the contestant by an uncle in the early 1950s. The episode is reported to air in three parts over spring next year.
Emin was featured in the BBC's 2024 list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. This year, Emin has made a significant impact on the art market with groundbreaking exhibitions, major museum commissions, and new print releases. In the BBC feature, she was quoted as saying: “Being a woman right now, I think we need as much resilience as we can have. I think now is a time when there has to be greater unity and a greater fight for women.”
Celebrity art collections continue to have an impact on the Contemporary art market, reflecting a growing interest in staging exhibitions that highlight the prominent and culturally relevant themes in their collections.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is set to host Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, an exhibition showcasing the celebrity couple's extensive collection of works by Black artists. The collection features pieces by renowned figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat among other prominent contemporary figures. This exhibition, which debuted at the Brooklyn Museum early in the year of February 2024, aims to make art accessible to diverse communities and celebrate the contributions of Black artists.
KAWS is once again in the spotlight, this time for his personal art collection, which will be exhibited in New York. The display features 350 works, a small selection from his extensive collection of approximately 4,000 pieces by over 500 artists. The show highlights a diverse range of talent, including modern and contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha, Lee Lozano, Willem de Kooning, Raymond Pettibon, alongside renowned street artists. This eclectic exhibition will run at The Drawing Centre until January 19, 2025. Meanwhile, the ongoing KAWS + Warhol exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh continues through January 20, 2025.
The print market isn't winding down just yet! Bonhams is set to host one final live Contemporary and Post-War Print Sale tomorrow. Highlights include two of Warhol’s Marilyn prints, estimated at £120,000–£150,000, alongside Warhol’s Vesuvius, valued at £25,000–£35,000. The sale also features Banksy’s Love Is In The Air, along with exceptional works by David Hockney, Bridget Riley, and more.
