Biography
Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr. Brainwash, is a contemporary street artist and filmmaker. Born in France in the late 1960s, Guetta developed a fascination with street art and graffiti from a young age. He began documenting the works of various street artists through video recordings, captivated by the rebellious nature and ability of this art form to communicate messages in public spaces.
Mr. Brainwash in Collaboration with Banksy
In the early 2000s, Guetta connected with renowned artist Banksy, who played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic journey, via his cousin, also a famed street artist, Invader. Adopting the pseudonym "Mr. Brainwash," Guetta began creating his own vibrant, pop-art-inspired works, drawing inspiration from Pop Art, Andy Warhol and, of course, Invader and Banksy.
Through his friendship with Banksy, Mr. Brainwash ventured into filmmaking. In 2010, he directed the documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop," exploring the world of street art and providing a behind-the-scenes look at the artists and their creative processes. The film received critical acclaim and further solidified Mr. Brainwash's status as a notable figure in the contemporary art scene. Banksy also encouraged Guetta to continue his own street art.
