Lawrence Gowing (second version), an etching by Lucian Freud from 1982, presents a close-up portrait of the artist’s friend and fellow painter and critic. The composition focuses on an abstracted face, rendered with a dense network of lines that suggest Gowing's features and convey a reflective expression. Freud's marks, applied with varying pressure, build texture and suggest the contours of the head.
Unlike many of Freud’s portraits, Lawrence Gowing (second version) avoids intense realism, focusing instead on presence. Gowing’s distorted expression is withheld, the mood somewhere between fatigue and contemplation. It’s not a flattering likeness, nor is it distant. Freud renders him as creased, watchful, receding slightly into himself.
Famed for his representations of the human form, Lucian Freud is one of the 20th Century's most celebrated artists. The grandson of psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, the artist confronts the psychological depth and bare complexities of the human body. From his early works to his celebrated nudes and portraits, Freud's canvases resonate with an almost tactile intensity, capturing the essence of his subjects with unwavering honesty. Freud painted only himself, close friends, and family, which floods his work with an intimacy that is felt by the viewer. His pursuit of honesty through portraiture shaped the trajectory of figurative art in the 20th century.
