Meaning & Analysis
Employing a rich variety of warm colours and textured effects, Glass Vase, Jug And Wheat (2020) represents one of David Hockney’s most recent takes on the genre of still life. Here, as in so many of his iPad drawings, the artist takes full advantage of the possibilities offered by the modern medium, and executes the image with at least three different types of brush. The jug containing a dozen of wheat straws at the very centre of the image exhibits a luminous quality as a gloss of sunlight seems to be reflected by its surface. The jug’s shiny texture contrasts with the grey vase on the left side which, due to Hockney’s use of a much thicker brush, appears to have a vividly coarse surface.
Hockney commented in the context of visual effects the iPad allowed him to achieve: ”This is a real new medium. So much variety is possible. You can’t overwork this because it’s not a real surface. And you can put anything on anything: a bright, bright blue on top of an intense yellow.“ A unique evidence of Hockney’s interest in the use of modern technology, the print captures the manifold nature of Hockney’s creative identity. Considered alongside the early works engaging with traditional mediums such as lithography and etching, the drawing attests to a consistently progressive nature of Hockney’s fifty-year career.
