Meaning & Analysis
I Love You (white, red, cool gold, poppy red) is a foil block print by Damien Hirst from his 2015 I Love You series. The print shows a single iridescent butterfly with its wings outspread, in the centre of a crisp white heart and set against a bright red backdrop. Hirst’s crisp visual language and bright colour choice compliments the photographic detail of the butterfly motif.
Tying together themes around morality, life, love, faith and aesthetics, the image of the butterfly is repeated twelve times across the series in varying colour combinations. Speaking of his obsession with butterflies Hirst has explained, “I think rather than be personal you have to find universal triggers: everyone’s frightened of glass, everyone’s frightened of sharks, everyone loves butterflies.”
