Capturing the Texas town known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” Bob Dylan's 2016 Bandera Texas is a signed giclée print from an edition of 295. Part of Dylan's acclaimed The Beaten Path series, the work turns a humble roadside barbecue establishment into a meditation on American frontier culture and the mythic road experiences that permeate Dylan's artistic vision.
At the centre of Bandera Texas is Woody's Bar-B-Que, with a neon sign almost the same shade of midnight blue as the evening sky behind it, illuminated in pools of light that speak to Dylan's fascination with the juxtaposition of authentic America and commercial culture. The town's designation as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” stems from its role as a staging area for the Great Western Cattle Trail during the late 19th century, connecting to Dylan's broader interest in westward expansion. Bandera was founded in 1855 by Polish Roman Catholic immigrants from Silesia, and carries layered cultural heritage that Dylan both captures and obscures in his choice of subject.
By setting the work at night, when the streets are all but deserted, Dylan transforms this small Texas community - with its 2020 population of just 829 - into something larger and more poignant than its physical scale suggests. Dylan was, however, committed to capturing poignancy such as this only by dealing with what is physically visible, ensuring viewers would recognise the same scene if they visited the location.
