Meaning & Analysis
Originally featured with Stik's 2015 coffee table book, Standing Figure (teal) is a lithograph depicting a lone stickman. The figure stands still, eyes wide, gazing to the side. A seminal work, Standing Figure may be seen as a testament to how Stik's minimalist approach is both rich in meaning and extremely sensitive to the urban environment in which it appears.
The six-line Stik man has taken on a considerably greater importance than Stik had initially intended, having come to represent the feeling of isolation and vulnerability that may result from urban isolation. The lone stickman is perhaps the most prominent theme in Stik's body of work, making it an appropriate inclusion as in the artist’s coffee table book.
Of the book, Stik explains that one of the primary motivations for the production of the publication was a growing understanding of the link between his work and the community around it that had developed over time, characterised by the proliferating presence of his lone stickmen in the cityscape.
