Born in Bronxville, New York, in 1947, Lawler has established herself as a critical voice in the Contemporary Art landscape. A graduate of Cornell University, Lawler moved to New York City in 1970, where she became a key figure in the Pictures Generation, alongside artists such as Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger. This movement is characterised by its focus on the mass media landscape, the appropriation of images and the interrogation of art's role in society.
Lawler's artistic practice primarily revolves around photography, where she captures artworks within their exhibition contexts—be it museums, galleries, or private collections. Her work raises questions about how art is perceived, contextualised, and valued.
Through her lens, Lawler engages with the narratives surrounding art's display and consumption. Her photographs reveal the dynamics of art ownership and the changing meanings of artworks as they move through different environments.
Lawler's career took off in the early 1980s when she began to gain recognition for her innovative approach to art photography. Notable works such as Pollock And Tureen (1984) and All Those Eyes (1989) demonstrate her ability to blend documentation with critical commentary. By focusing on the context in which artworks are presented, she considers the implications of display and curation.
In addition to her photographic work, Lawler has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including a significant retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York titled Why Pictures Now (2017).
Lawler's practice continues to evolve, exploring the intersection of art, appropriation, and media. Her 2022 series, Three Flags, highlights her ongoing inquiry into the status of art in the modern world, further affirming her relevance in contemporary discussions about the art market and its implications.
