Meaning & Analysis
Composed of three panels, each differing in size, This Is Shahnoza In 3 Parts 6 is a print from Julian Opie’s This Is Shahnoza In 3 Partsseries from 2005. Stemming from his work with a pole dancer called Shahnoza who he met in Soho, London, this print shows an image of the nude model lying horizontally with her left knee bent and right leg outstretched. Opie produces the print in a horizontal format that echoes the pose of the figure.
This Is Shahnoza In 3 Parts 6 shows the model with a head reduced to a simple circle and her body rendered in thick bold lines to form a highly stylised image. Throughout his work, Opie sets to strip down the things that he sees around him in order to reflect and play on not just other art, but on the artifice that characterises contemporary life.
By depicting Shahnoza in a pose that draws from choreography, gestures and typical iconography of strip shows and catwalks, Opie succinctly conveys the way in which seemingly natural human behaviour is made up of learned performance codes. Indeed, this print exemplifies key themes that run through the artist’s entire oeuvre and what he is renowned for: engagement with art history, use of new technology, and obsession with the human body.
