Jiang Tiefeng is a key figure in Chinese Contemporary Art. He began his formal training at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he graduated in 1963. Jiang is best known as a founding member of the Yunnan School of Painting, a movement celebrated for its 'heavy-colour painting' technique that incorporates traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern expressions.
Evoking the dynamism of life, Jiang employs bright inks and calligraphic lines to depict women, horses, birds, and flowers. His works serve as a commentary on the cultural narratives of the Yunnan people, allowing viewers to engage with the folklore embedded in his art.
Jiang Tiefeng's artistic journey has been marked by a series of significant milestones. In the 1960s, he was tasked with creating propaganda posters during Mao's Cultural Revolution, a period that influenced his later works. Despite the government's condemnation of artists during this period, he honed his artistic voice in secret, blending traditional techniques with a bold approach to colour and form. His practice culminated in the establishment of the Yunnan School of Painting, which has become a cornerstone of Contemporary Chinese Art.
He primarily works in watercolor and serigraphy, and his art has been widely collected internationally since the early 1980s. During this time, he held teaching positions at the Yunnan Art Institute, where he worked as both instructor and professor.
In 1979, Jiang was commissioned by the Chinese government to create a mural representing Yunnan Province, which was installed in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. The following year, he earned second place in an international competition hosted by the United Nations. In 1983, he traveled to the United States through a cultural exchange program with the University of Southern California.
Jiang’s work has been exhibited in prominent institutions worldwide, reflecting his significant impact on the art scene. Notable exhibitions include the Asia Society and Museum in New York, the Michelson Museum of Art in Texas, and the Liuhaisu Museum in Shanghai. Additionally, his art has been showcased at major events such as the Westlake International Exhibition of Fine Art in Hangzhou and the International Exhibition of Illustration Children’s Books in Italy, underscoring his global recognition.
