Meaning & Analysis

The president’s skin is rendered in light blue with yellow tints and his eyes are coloured in orange which gives the president a rather demonic appearance. Warhol intended to depict Nixon in a negative light as this print was produced to support George McGovern’s Presidential campaign in 1972. Beneath the image of Nixon, Warhol writes in black block capitals, VOTE MCGOVERN.

Warhol was obsessed with celebrities and fame and is remembered for hosting parties at his New York studio, The Factory, where he would invite all the hottest stars to drink, dance and mingle. Warhol produced many portraits of these celebrities, however he was also interested in depicting political figures whose notoriety surpassed the realm of surface level fame and glamour. Other US presidents that Warhol depicted in his prints include Teddy Roosevelt, John. F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
