Biography

Born in London in 1932, Alan Green emerged as a notable figure in the British art scene, particularly within the Abstract movement. He studied at the Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he honed his skills as an illustrator and printmaker before turning to painting in the 1960s. Green's work often reflects his belief in creating “ordinary paintings as ordinary as the real world”, a philosophy that shaped his artistic approach.

During the 1960s, Alan Green began to explore the possibilities of etching and printmaking, which became central to his oeuvre. He frequently participated in international exhibitions. His artistic practice was influenced by the social and political landscapes of the 20th century, which he interpreted through his abstract lens.

Green's artistic career was marked by significant achievements and contributions to the world of printmaking. His work is distinguished by a focus on abstraction, representing the emotional qualities of his subjects rather than their physical forms. One of his most recognised prints is Black Over White From Centre To Edge, which exemplifies his exploration of spatial relationships.

Throughout his career, Green exhibited extensively, participating in solo and group exhibitions internationally. His work was showcased in galleries including the Tate.

On 7 May 2003, Green died of cancer in Monmouth, United Kingdom.
