Meaning & Analysis

Warm Regards is a signed hand letterpress in colours produced by the acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2005. The print depicts a comic cartoon figure inspired by the popular ‘Poo’ emoji.  KAWS appropriates the well-known emoji by rendering it in his distinct visual style. The figure is rendered in brown with bright yellow eyes and KAWS adds his signature crosses to the eyes, a recurring motif that the artist incorporates into most of his prints.  The cartoon’s arms are outstretched, and the figure is wearing white gloves, another trademark feature of KAWS’ visual language.

Taking an emoji as the inspiration for this artwork reflects how KAWS is an artist who believes art should be for the people and not the art world elite. KAWS often incorporates popular culture into his art and frequently depicts recognisable cartoon characters, such as SpongeBob Square Pants, Snoopy the Dog or The Simpsons in his works. The artist has also collaborated with popular icons such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams and brands like Nike and Uniqlo, which reflects how KAWS has been able to bridge the divide between popular and high culture.

KAWS’ love for popular culture and ability to appeal to the masses has meant the artist is often compared to Andy Warhol, the father of the Pop Art movement who turned everyday objects like high heel shoes and Campbell’s Soup cans into works of fine art.
