Painted Environment III, is a photographic print executed in 1994 in an edition of 25. Executed by the much loved British artist David Hockney, this is a digital inkjet print in colour.
In Painted Environment III, the canvas from the far-right of the composition in Painted Environment II, is now placed alone in the colourful, swirling room, where the walls and floor are a mass of abstracted forms. The reusing of artworks to construct different compositions confirms Hockney’s on-going preoccupation with the challenge of perspective and representation. In other words, Hockney has long been concerned with the challenge of how we perceive the world and how time and space can successfully be captured in two-dimensions. Hockney plays with the conventions of picture making in his Painted Environment series as paintings are captured by a digital medium: photography. Moreover, what is a three-dimensional set up, is ultimately rendered in a two-dimensional form. These intricacies and experiments with representation underpin Hockney’s practice and form the core of this series of prints.
