Meaning & Analysis
Sex Parts (F. & S. II.173) is a signed screen print by the renowned 20th century artist, Andy Warhol. The black and white print on HMP paper was created in 1978 and comes in an edition size of 30. The print shows an image of a man’s buttocks. Warhol preserves the anonymity of the model as the man is captured from behind so his face is not visible. A pair of arms are captured holding the person bending over. The figures depicted in this artwork appear to be engaged in a passionate sexual act.
The style of Sex Parts (F. & S. II.173) contrasts with many of Warhol’s other artworks which are characterised by his use of bright and bold colours, layering and thick gestural lines. This artwork is more simple in terms of visual style, privileging black and white over a variety of colours. The simplicity of the image focuses the viewer on the intimate scene being captured in the artwork. Sex Parts (F. & S. II.173) is one of six artworks in Warhol’s Sex Parts collection. Each artwork depicts close-ups of nude men engaged sexual activity. Warhol describes these artworks as ‘landscapes’ which reflects his fascination with the nude form and the way it can be explored through art.
The subject matter of Sex Parts differs markedly with Warhol’s better known artworks. Hailed as ‘the father of Pop Art’, Warhol’s most famous works are centred around celebrities, consumerism and popular culture. The Sex Parts collection, however, is a more intimate and personal body of prints which makes these artworks highly sought after on the art market.
