Mick Jagger (F. & S. II.142) depicts Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones, in profile. For this screen print in an edition of 250, Warhol has drawn over Jagger’s hair, nose, and lips, drawing attention to these details. Jagger’s famous lips occupy the center of the composition. In addition to his drawing over Jagger’s likeness, Warhol added rectangular splotches of color. A gold band highlights the side of the rocker’s face, creating a barrier between photograph and drawing. Both the subject and artists signatures reside at the bottom corners of the page.
Mick Jagger (F. & S. II.142) comes from the larger series, Mick Jagger produced by Warhol in 1975. Mick and Bianca Jagger spent the summer of ’75 at Warhol’s Long Island residence. During their stay, the Pop artist snapped the polaroid photographs that provide the basis for this series of 10 portraits. Due to the subject matter, changing style of Warhol, and the signature of two twentieth century icons, the images of this series are some of the most sought-after in Warhol’s oeuvre.
