Flash November 22 (F. & S. II.33) is a signed screen print produced by Andy Warhol, one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement, and comes in an edition size of 200. The print was made in 1968 in response to the assassination of the American president, John F. Kennedy. In this print, Warhol takes an image of the Presidential Seal which would appear on news screens following announcements regarding Kennedy’s assassination.
The print is part of the Flash November 22 collection, a body of eleven screen prints, all of which take images that circulated in the mass media following the assassination of the president. Flash November 22 (F. & S. II.33) is one of the few prints in the series that does not feature Kennedy himself or his wife, First Lady Jackie Kennedy. The collection encapsulates the media’s obsession with tragedy and Warhol’s fascination with the way tragic events were reported in the news.
Warhol’s works tend to be characterised by their bright and bold colours and graphic lines. In this print, however, a sombre dark grey dominates the composition and the faded image of the seal lacks definition.
