Meaning & Analysis

Warhol layers different bright colours on top of each other which makes it seem as if the skater is skating out of a black square. The use of gestural lines seen in this print is a characteristic feature of Warhol’s Pop Art aesthetic. The lines in this print create a sense of depth and motion and produce the impression that the skater is moving rapidly

Warhol was among sixteen other artists who were invited by Lazar Bujic to produce a portfolio of artworks in honour of the Olympics. While Warhol was not an avid sports fan, he was intrigued by the fame and celebrity status of sports people. Other artists who participated in the portfolio, which was called Art and Sports, were David Hockney, Piero Dorazio, Henry Moore, Jean-Michel Folon, Giuseppe Santomaso and Cy Twombly. Warhol’s Speed Skater print stands out amongst the other works in the portfolio as it was used as the official Winter Olympics poster.

  • Andy Warhol was a leading figure of the Pop Art movement and is often considered the father of Pop Art. Born in 1928, Warhol allowed cultural references of the 20th century to drive his work. From the depiction of glamorous public figures, such as Marilyn Monroe, to the everyday Campbell’s Soup Can, the artist challenged what was considered art by blurring the boundaries between high art and mass consumerism. Warhol's preferred screen printing technique further reiterated his obsession with mass culture, enabling art to be seen as somewhat of a commodity through the reproduced images in multiple colour ways.
